About this coinHistory

The 2007-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Denver issue for the year and must be kept separate from the 2007-D Satin Finish piece that catalogues independently as part of the third-year Satin Finish Mint Set program. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both grade the regular and Satin Finish 2007-D as distinct issues that price independently. The regular 2007-D came out of the standard 2007 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 2,400,000 pieces, exactly matching the Philadelphia figure for the year and continuing the matched P and D mintage pattern that defines the mint-set-only stretch. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.

Strike quality on the regular 2007-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial bag-and-sorter handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. As with every 2005 through 2010 Kennedy, the most consequential authentication point at this date is finish identification: the regular 2007-D shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2007-D shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are routinely confused in raw sales. PCGS and NGC slab inserts call out the finish explicitly, and any premium-priced raw piece should be examined under a single light source to confirm the surface before purchase.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the regular 2007-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2007 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. Raw examples sell just above face value, with MS66 and MS67 carrying small premiums and MS68 effectively condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions. The matched 2,400,000 P and D mintages place the 2007 pair in the lower-mintage portion of the 2002-2010 stretch, and date-run collectors tracking the full mint-set-only window pick up both regular issues at parallel cost.
