About this coinHistory

The 2007-P Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Philadelphia issue for the year and should not be confused with the separately catalogued 2007-P Satin Finish piece that arrived through the third year of the Satin Finish Mint Set program. The two share a date and mintmark but trade as independent catalog entries with different pricing and different grading conventions at PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC. The regular 2007-P came out of the standard 2007 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 2,400,000 pieces, the same figure as 2006 and well below the 2005 peak of 3,800,000. The flat year-over-year count reflects continued reduced Mint Set order volume rather than any policy shift. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the regular 2007-P holds the mint-set-only era standard. Dies are pulled before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial handling, and cellophane packaging arrives at the press. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical piece, and weak strikes are uncommon. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because the coin never sees the bag-and-sorter abuse that dominated pre-2002 grading caps. The single most consequential authentication point at this date is finish identification: the regular 2007-P shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2007-P shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices from specially prepared dies. Coins offered as one finish but bearing the other are routinely misattributed in raw transactions. Read the slab insert before any premium is paid, and on raw examples verify the surface under a single light source before purchase.

For year-set collectors the regular 2007-P is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2007 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. Raw examples sell just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 condition-rare. For collectors building a complete run through the 2002-2020 mint-set-only stretch, the 2007 pair sits comfortably in the middle of that window and pairs cleanly with the surrounding 2006 and 2008 issues at similar price points.
