About this coinHistory

The 2006-D Satin Finish Kennedy half is the Denver companion to the 2006-P Satin and the second-year Denver entry of the Satin Finish Mint Set program. Mintage at 847,361 matches Philadelphia exactly, as each 2006 Satin Finish Mint Set held one P and one D piece, so production tracked Mint Set order count rather than independent facility demand. The figure represents a 312,000-piece step below the 2005-D launch year and sets the routine annual volume for the program's middle stretch. The regular 2006-D brilliant uncirculated half is a separate catalog entry from the standard Uncirculated Coin Set product line and should not be conflated with this issue. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core at 11.34 g, 30.6 mm, with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation, with Gilroy Roberts's GR initials at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Surface identification carries the authentication weight for every Satin Finish Kennedy. The 2006-D shows a uniform satiny sheen across fields and devices that resembles neither the rotating cartwheel of a brilliant uncirculated half nor the mirrored fields and frosted devices of a proof. Under a single light source the surface reads as one even matte sheet without rotation and without contrast. Denver's strike pattern through the mint-set-only era runs marginally tighter than Philadelphia, and the Satin Finish surface preserves die-fresh detail on Kennedy's hair above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers cleanly. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC label the slab insert as Satin Finish or SP, the Specimen designation. Original Mint Set cardboard inserts carry the Mint's finish attribution and remain the cheapest verification path on raw material. Misattributions between the regular and Satin 2006-D pick up frequency from the second program year forward.

For Denver-set and year-set collectors the 2006-D Satin Finish is acquired through the 2006 Satin Finish Mint Set rather than the standard Uncirculated Coin Set, and the parallel product structure carries over from 2005. Raw examples in original Mint Set packaging trade at modest premiums above face value, with certified SP67 and SP68 examples carrying stronger premiums and SP69 the working ceiling for the date. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at SP67 and SP68 from broken sets, with Denver pieces showing marginally better strike-grade distribution than Philadelphia, as is the case across the mint-set-only stretch. The matched 847,361 P and D figures put the 2006 pair at parallel acquisition cost and at the same structural position in the six-year Satin run. A complete twelve-coin date-and-mint Satin Finish set tracks this pair as the first routine-volume year of the program.
