The 2008-P Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Philadelphia issue for the year and should not be conflated with the separately catalogued 2008-P Satin Finish piece that came through the fourth year of the Satin Finish Mint Set program. The regular 2008-P came out of the standard 2008 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 1,700,000 pieces, a 700,000-coin pullback from 2007 and the lowest 2002-era Philadelphia Kennedy mintage to that point. The drop tracks reduced Mint Set order volume during a year when collector spending pulled back broadly. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.
Strike quality on the regular 2008-P holds the mint-set-only era standard. Dies are pulled before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial handling, and cellophane packaging arrives at the press. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical piece, and weak strikes are uncommon at Philadelphia for the date. The customary contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because the coin never sees bag-and-sorter abuse. The single most consequential authentication point at this date remains finish identification: the regular 2008-P shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2008-P shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices from specially prepared dies. The two are routinely misattributed in raw transactions. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both call the finish out on the slab insert, and any raw example offered at a premium should be examined under a single light source to confirm the surface before purchase.
For year-set collectors the regular 2008-P is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2008 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. The 1,700,000 mintage matches the lowest figure of the 2002-2010 mint-set-only stretch outside the 2006-D, and the lower count is worth noting for date-run collectors though not worth chasing at premium because supply still comfortably exceeds collector demand. Raw examples sell just above face value, with MS66 and MS67 examples carrying small premiums and MS68 condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions. The 2008 pair anchors the lower-mintage segment of the early mint-set-only stretch and pairs structurally with the 2009 issues that followed at similar reduced output.
