The 2009-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Denver issue for the year and must be kept separate from the 2009-D Satin Finish piece that catalogues independently as part of the fifth-year Satin Finish Mint Set program. The regular 2009-D came out of the standard 2009 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 1,900,000 pieces, exactly matching the Philadelphia figure for the year and continuing the matched P and D mintage pattern that defines the mint-set-only stretch. The identical count reflects mint-set production arithmetic: P and D halves are pulled in identical quantities to populate the annual set, with small variances attributed to bag and roll direct-sale residue. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.
Strike quality on the regular 2009-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. As with every 2005 through 2010 Kennedy, the most consequential authentication point at this date is finish identification: the regular 2009-D shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2009-D shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are routinely misattributed in raw transactions, and PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both grade them as distinct issues that price independently. Verify the finish under a single light source before paying any premium on a raw example.
For year-set and Denver-set collectors the regular 2009-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2009 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. Raw examples sell just above face value, with MS66 and MS67 carrying small premiums and MS68 effectively condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions. The matched 1,900,000 P and D mintages put the 2009 pair in the lower-mintage portion of the 2002-2010 stretch and at parallel acquisition cost. The 2008 and 2009 pairs together form the low-mintage cluster of the early mint-set-only run, and a date-and-mint set assembled across the full 2002-2020 stretch carries those four years as its scarcest core.
