The 2017-D Kennedy half is the Denver business-strike entry for the year and the higher half of the cluster's most asymmetric P/D split. Mintage came in at 2,900,000 pieces against the Philadelphia output of 1,800,000, a 1.1-million-coin gap that runs counter to the typical late mint-set-only pattern of matched or near-matched P/D figures. The 2017-D figure is the highest Denver Kennedy mintage of the 2015-2020 cluster outside of 2018, and the asymmetric split for the year reflects Denver-side production scheduling that pulled ahead of Philadelphia in 2017. The issue exists exclusively through the standard 2017 Uncirculated Coin Set. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2017-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example. Dies are rotated before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial bagging, and protective cellophane prevents the bag-and-sorter handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because no piece sees commercial handling. Authentication concerns at this date are limited to mintmark identification: P versus D placement above the date is the only field a buyer needs to verify when separating the 2017 issues, and the 2017-D should not be confused with the separately catalogued 2017-S Enhanced Uncirculated piece, which carries an enhanced finish and an S mintmark. Read the slab insert closely on any premium-priced 2017 to confirm the standard D attribution.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2017-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2017 Uncirculated Coin Set. Raw examples sell just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67 and condition rarity at MS68. The 2.9-million mintage makes the 2017-D the more common half of the 2017 P/D pair and the second-highest Denver figure of the closing cluster, with PCGS and NGC populations skewing slightly higher in MS67 than the lower-mintage Philadelphia side. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks. The 2017-D pairs cleanly with the 2016-D bracketing it and the 2018-D running ahead of it on the Denver date run, with the asymmetric 2017 split standing out on a checklist as the cluster's anomaly year on the Denver-runs-ahead side.
