The 2017-P Kennedy half is the Philadelphia business-strike entry for the year, with mintage of 1,800,000 pieces and the lowest Philadelphia figure of the 2015-2020 cluster. The 2017-P sits 1.1 million coins below the 2017-D output of 2,900,000, an unusual reversal of the typical late mint-set-only ordering: Philadelphia generally either matches Denver to the unit (as in 2015 and 2016) or runs slightly ahead. The 2017 inversion sees Denver producing more than Philadelphia, a split that comes back to roughly equal figures by 2018 before falling back to parity in 2019 and 2020. The issue exists exclusively through the standard 2017 Uncirculated Coin Set. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2017-P holds the late mint-set-only era pattern. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical example, dies are pulled before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging arrives immediately at the press. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because no piece sees the bag-and-sorter handling that historically suppressed Kennedy grades. Authentication concerns at this date are limited to mintmark identification: P versus D placement above the date is the only field a buyer needs to verify when separating the 2017 issues, and on the 2017-P the lower Philadelphia mintage relative to Denver makes the P attribution worth confirming on any premium-priced piece. The 2017-P does not carry an enhanced uncirculated finish, which is a separately catalogued San Francisco issue from the 225th Anniversary Enhanced Uncirculated program; verify that the slab insert reads simply "2017-P" and not the enhanced variety.

For year-set and Philadelphia-set collectors the 2017-P is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2017 Uncirculated Coin Set. The 1.8-million mintage makes the 2017-P marginally scarcer than its 2015-P, 2016-P, and 2018-P neighbors on the Philadelphia side of the late mint-set-only ledger, and the figure is worth noting on a checklist, though prices on raw examples remain just above face value because supply still comfortably exceeds collector demand. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks.
