About this coinHistory

The 2018-D Kennedy half is the Denver business-strike entry for the year and the single highest Kennedy mintage of the late 2002-2020 mint-set-only stretch. The 6,100,000-piece output stands roughly 1.3 million above the Philadelphia figure of 4,800,000 and roughly three times the Denver outputs that bracket it in 2017 and 2019. Both 2018 mints jumped well above their 2017 and 2019 figures, with Denver running ahead of Philadelphia in the year's split. The elevated 2018 figures track the additional Mint product activity for the year that drew on cupronickel halves beyond the standard Uncirculated Coin Set base, though the precise distribution channels for the additional Denver output are not laid out in catalog form. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2018-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example. Dies are rotated before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial bagging, and protective cellophane prevents the bag-and-sorter handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because no piece sees commercial handling. Authentication concerns at this date are limited to mintmark identification: P versus D placement above the date is the only field a buyer needs to verify when separating the 2018 issues. The 2018-D should not be confused with the separately catalogued 2018-S Silver Reverse Proof, a 99.9% silver reverse-proof piece with a distinctive frosted-field-mirrored-device finish struck at San Francisco. The standard 2018-D circulation finish is conventional brilliant uncirculated.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2018-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2018 Uncirculated Coin Set or through one of the additional 2018 Mint products that drew on Denver halves. Raw examples sell just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67 and condition rarity at MS68. The 6.1-million mintage means PCGS and NGC populations run higher than any other Denver entry in the 2015-2020 cluster on supply terms alone, and the larger submission base feeds proportionally more high-grade certified pieces into the registry pipeline. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks. The 2018-D stands out on a Denver checklist as the cluster's high-water mintage entry by a comfortable margin, anchoring the cluster's middle and providing a clean structural counter-example to the lower 2017-D and 2019-D figures bracketing it.
