About this coinHistory

The 1810 large cent was struck in substantial quantity, with a mintage of 1,458,500 coins. The high output makes the 1810 one of the most available Classic Head dates and a natural type coin for collectors who want a single example of the design. Good to Fine examples are readily available, and higher grades are more attainable than for scarcer dates in the series.

The 1810 is also notable for its overdate variety (1810/09), which is collected separately. The standard-date 1810 accounts for the majority of the year's output and is the more affordable of the two versions. A collector who simply wants the date rather than the overdate will find the standard 1810 a straightforward acquisition.

Strike quality on 1810 large cents is generally good. The Mint was operating efficiently by this point in the Classic Head series, and the dies produced clean impressions. The copper quality varies coin to coin, as always with early copper, but the high mintage means that a selective buyer can afford to wait for a well-struck example with attractive surfaces.
