About this coinHistory

The 1810/09 overdate large cent was struck from a die originally engraved with the date 1809. The Mint updated the final digit by punching a 0 over the existing 9, and traces of the underlying 9 are visible on well-preserved examples. The overdate is cataloged separately from the standard 1810 and carries a premium among early large cent collectors.

Identifying the 1810/09 requires examining the final digit of the date under magnification. The curved remnant of the 9 appears beneath or alongside the 0, creating a composite character. On coins in Fine or better, the overdate is usually identifiable under a standard loupe. On heavily worn examples, the doubled digit can be ambiguous.

The 1810/09 is a popular overdate among Classic Head collectors because the host date (1809) is itself a scarce coin. The overdate die preserves evidence of the 1809 date while producing 1810-dated coins, linking two consecutive years of the series through a single die. Certification services attribute the overdate, and confirmed examples carry the variety designation on the holder.
