About this coinHistory

The 1811 large cent was produced in a mintage of 218,025 coins, a modest figure that makes the standard-date coin scarce without being rare. The 1811 is harder to find than the common 1810 and 1812 dates but easier than the truly scarce years elsewhere in the early cent series. Most surviving examples grade between Good and Fine.

The 1811 also exists as an overdate (1811/0), which is collected separately. The standard 1811 is the more common of the two and serves as the primary entry for the date in most collections. Die varieties exist within the standard date and are tracked by Sheldon number.

The 1811 sits in the later part of the Classic Head series, two years before the War of 1812-related production halt that would interrupt large cent coinage in 1815. The coin was struck during a period of escalating tensions between the United States and Great Britain, tensions that would culminate in war the following year and disrupt the Mint's copper supply for years.
