About this coinHistory

The 1939 Doubled Monticello Jefferson nickel is a doubled die variety showing clear doubling of the word MONTICELLO on the reverse. The doubling was created during the die hubbing process when the master hub struck the working die with slight misalignment in successive impressions, leaving a secondary image of the Monticello lettering visible on the finished coin. The variety was recognized by specialists in the 1960s and has become one of the more important Jefferson nickel die varieties.

Identification requires examining the word MONTICELLO under magnification. The doubling appears as clear secondary letters beneath or beside the main lettering, with the specific pattern depending on the hub alignment during die creation. On well-preserved examples, the doubling is immediately visible without extraordinary optical aids. On worn coins, attribution can be more challenging and may require certification.

The 1939 Doubled Monticello commands significant premiums over normal 1939 nickels. Surviving populations are limited, and Mint State examples are scarce enough to attract specialist attention when they appear at auction. PCGS and NGC both attribute the variety on certified examples, and collectors building comprehensive Jefferson nickel variety collections treat it as a required acquisition alongside other major die varieties in the series.
