The 1939 Reverse of 1938 Jefferson nickel uses the original reverse hub from 1938, which featured less crisp detail on the Monticello columns and steps than the modified hub introduced later in 1939. Philadelphia struck the majority of 1939 coins with the original reverse before the die modification, producing a substantial population of coins that collectors now categorize as Reverse of 1938 regardless of year. The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State.
The reverse modification was ordered to improve strike definition on Monticello, particularly the steps beneath the main portico. The original reverse (Reverse of 1938) tended to produce coins with softer step detail even on strong strikes, while the modified reverse (Reverse of 1940) yielded sharper steps that produced the Full Steps designation collectors now prize. Both sub-types exist for 1939 and represent a transitional year for Jefferson nickel design refinement.
For collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets with reverse varieties, the 1939 Reverse of 1938 is one of multiple required entries for the year. Along with the Reverse of 1940 variety, plus Denver and San Francisco issues with both reverse types, the 1939 year requires up to six different coin acquisitions for comprehensive representation. Most date collectors acquire only the main Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco issues and leave the reverse varieties to specialist pursuit.
