About this coinHistory

Denver struck 13,938,000 Jefferson nickels in 1942, all in the standard copper-nickel composition (Denver did not produce Wartime Silver nickels in 1942, unlike San Francisco which struck the 1942-S in silver). The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics vary, and Full Steps examples command modest premiums for strong reverse detail.

Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 1942-D without difficulty. The coin is distinct from the contemporary 1942-S Wartime Silver and the 1942-P Wartime Silver, and specialists recognize it as the only 1942 branch mint Jefferson nickel in the original copper-nickel composition. The 1942-D therefore has a unique position in the wartime transition sequence.

Denver continued copper-nickel production throughout 1942 because the facility's silver supply was prioritized for other denominations, and Wartime Silver nickel production was concentrated at Philadelphia and San Francisco. The arrangement reflects the Mint's complex wartime logistics as it managed bullion supply, die distribution, and production priorities across multiple facilities.
