1942-D D/D Horizontal D RPM

The 1942-D D/D Horizontal D Repunched Mintmark is one of the more visually dramatic varieties in the Jefferson nickel series. The D mintmark was initially punched into the working die in a horizontal position (rotated 90 degrees from the intended orientation) before being corrected with a second punch in the proper vertical position. The result is a coin that shows both positions of the D clearly visible on the finished coin: the horizontal first punch overlapping with the vertical second punch.

Identification is straightforward with magnification. The horizontal D is immediately obvious as a secondary mintmark lying on its side, with the vertical D overlapping. The diagnostic is so distinctive that specialists often recognize the variety without referring to reference images, though certification from PCGS or NGC provides the most reliable attribution for premium-priced examples.

The 1942-D D/D Horizontal D RPM is a recognized variety in major Jefferson nickel references and commands significant premiums over the standard 1942-D. Surviving populations are limited, and Mint State examples are scarce enough to attract specialist attention when they appear at auction. For collectors building comprehensive Jefferson nickel variety sets, the coin is a required acquisition that represents one of the more dramatic mintmark errors in the series.
