About this coinHistory

The 1967 Jefferson nickel had a total mintage of 107,325,800 coins across Philadelphia and Denver, produced without mintmarks as the final year of the mintmark suspension policy. The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally strong, and Full Steps examples exist in adequate numbers for specialist demand at modest premiums.

Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 1967 without difficulty. The coin is the final no-mintmark Jefferson nickel, as mintmarks resumed in 1968 with new rules (no Philadelphia mintmark on circulation nickels until 1980, but Denver and San Francisco mintmarks returning).

1967 was the year known as the "Summer of Love," with the counterculture movement reaching its symbolic peak in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. It was also the year of major race riots in Detroit, Newark, and other cities, and the year of Thurgood Marshall's appointment as the first African American Supreme Court justice. The Jefferson nickels struck that year circulated through one of the most culturally intense years of the decade.
