About this coinHistory

Denver struck 91,227,880 Jefferson nickels in 1968, the first year mintmarks returned after the 1965-1967 suspension. Philadelphia continued producing nickels without a mintmark (the P mintmark would not appear on circulation Jefferson nickels until 1980), so 1968-D was the first post-suspension branch mint Jefferson nickel and the first with a visible mintmark since 1964.

The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally strong, and Full Steps examples exist in adequate numbers for specialist demand at modest premiums. Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 1968-D without difficulty.

1968 was a tumultuous year in American history: Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April, Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June, and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago was marked by violent clashes between protesters and police. Richard Nixon won the presidential election in November on a platform of law and order. The Jefferson nickels struck that year circulated through what many considered the most politically and socially chaotic year of the decade.
