About this coinHistory

The 1967 SMS Jefferson nickel was the final year of the Special Mint Set program. Beginning in 1968, traditional proof sets would resume at San Francisco, and the SMS format was discontinued. The 1967 SMS therefore represents the closing entry of the three-year SMS interlude that defined Jefferson nickel collecting from 1965-1967.

Production and quality characteristics are similar to the earlier SMS coins, with satin-like surfaces on polished planchets. The 1967 SMS is available in all grades and accessible through specialist channels at modest premiums. Some 1967 SMS coins are considered among the best-produced in the three-year program, with sharper strike detail and more consistent preservation than the earlier years.

Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel collections including the SMS interlude acquire the 1967 as the terminal piece of the sub-series. For specialists, the coin represents the closing of an experimental period in American coinage production and the return to more traditional proof collecting methods starting in 1968.
