The 1994-P Special Uncirculated Jefferson nickel was produced as part of a commemorative coin set celebrating Thomas Jefferson's 250th birthday. The coin was struck with a matte finish distinct from both ordinary circulation strikes and traditional mirror proofs. Only 167,703 sets were produced, making the 1994-P SMS considerably scarcer than regular 1994-P circulation issues.
The matte finish of the 1994-P SMS gives the coin a distinctive appearance with satin-like fields and frosted devices. Identification requires comparing the surface characteristics to reference images of both circulation and matte-finish production. PCGS and NGC both attribute the variety on certified examples, and specialized slab labels identify the coin as "Matte" or "Special Uncirculated."
The 1994-P Matte represents one of the Mint's occasional experiments with alternative finish formats for commemorative or specialty issues. It commands meaningful premiums over regular 1994-P nickels and is a required acquisition for collectors building comprehensive Jefferson nickel collections including special issues.
Heritage Auctions regularly offers certified 1994-P Matte examples at prices reflecting their scarcity within the modern series. The coin is one of two major matte-finish modern Jefferson nickels, paired with the 1997-P Matte, and together the two represent the Mint's brief experiment with the format in the mid-1990s.
