About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 571,680,000 Jefferson nickels in 2007, the second year of the Franki-Weaver-Schlag composite design that had been introduced in 2006 with the Return to Monticello program. The coin is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State at minimal premiums over face value. Modern Jefferson nickels of this volume are essentially a commodity at standard grade levels, with the only meaningful collector variable being Full Steps designation on the reverse.

The Full Steps challenge for 2007-P, as for most modern Jefferson nickels, lies in finding examples where all five steps of Monticello are crisply defined with no fusion between adjacent step lines. NGC has commented that the Mint's low-relief Jefferson design tended to produce consistently sharp strikes only until the late 1980s, after which master hub aging and die maintenance issues made Full Steps increasingly difficult to achieve. The 2007 production benefited from improved die maintenance compared to the 1990s, but well-struck FS examples still command meaningful premiums over standard MS65-MS67 coins.

For collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets, the 2007-P is a routine acquisition that does not require any specialist effort beyond the Full Steps preference. Most rolls and Mint Sets contain the date in good condition, and high-grade specialists pursuing MS67 Full Steps examples can find them through specialist channels at modest premiums.
