About this coinHistory

The 2007-P Satin Finish Jefferson nickel was produced for inclusion in the year's United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set. The Satin Finish program ran from 2005 through 2010 and used a distinctive matte-like burnishing process that distinguished Mint Set coins from both standard business strikes and traditional mirror proofs. The Satin Finish gives the coin a soft, even luster without the deep mirror reflection of a proof or the brilliant cartwheel of a typical business strike.

Production was limited to what was needed for Mint Set assembly. Total mintage figures for Satin Finish coins are not separately reported for individual years, but the Mint Set populations during the 2005-2010 program ranged from approximately 600,000 to 1,000,000 sets per year, meaning the 2007-P Satin Finish exists in roughly that quantity. Loose examples (broken out of original Mint Set packaging) command modest premiums over standard 2007-P business strikes.

Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire the 2007-P Satin Finish as a distinct entry from the standard 2007-P business strike. Specialists building complete Satin Finish sub-series sets pursue all 12 issues from the 2005-2010 program (six years times two mints). The Satin Finish coins represent the Mint's last sustained experiment with alternative finish formats for circulation-design coins before returning to standard burnished surfaces in 2011.
