The 2008-D Satin Finish Jefferson nickel was included in the year's United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set, paired with the 2008-P Satin Finish in the same set. The Satin Finish program continued through 2008 and would run for two more years (2009 and 2010) before the Mint discontinued the format in favor of returning to standard burnished surfaces for Uncirculated Set coins beginning in 2011.
Production was limited to what was needed for Mint Set assembly. The 2008 Mint Set was particularly notable as a transition piece because it documented the recession-era continuation of the special finish program at a time when many other Mint operations were being adjusted downward to match reduced commercial demand. The Satin Finish program's survival through the recession years reflects its basis in collector subscription orders outside of commercial demand.
Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire the 2008-D Satin Finish as a distinct entry from the standard 2008-D business strike.
