About this coinHistory

The 2010-D Satin Finish Jefferson nickel is the final Denver Satin Finish entry in the 2005-2010 Mint Set sub-series. Beginning in 2011, the Mint discontinued the Satin Finish format. The 2010-D therefore closes both the year's Satin Finish pair (with the 2010-P Satin Finish) and the entire six-year Satin Finish program at the Denver Mint.

Production was limited to what was needed for the 2010 Mint Set, which contained the year's circulating denominations from both Philadelphia and Denver. Collectors who maintained Mint Set subscriptions through the Satin Finish era now own all twelve issues of the 2005-2010 program (six years times two mints) within their Mint Set holdings, while specialists who broke up sets or acquired loose examples had to pursue each piece individually.

Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire the 2010-D Satin Finish as both a required year entry and a closing piece for the Satin Finish sub-series. The terminal-year status gives the coin a modest premium of collector interest beyond what its actual scarcity would justify.
