2020-W Proof

The 2020-W proof Jefferson nickel is historically significant as the first Jefferson nickel to carry the W mintmark for West Point. The coins were included as bonus additions to 2020 ATB Quarter Silver Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets sold by the Mint, making them distinct from normal S-mint proof nickels. Only about 400,000 of each were produced (for the Silver Proof Set version and the Uncirculated Set version combined).

The W mintmark placement follows the same position as S mintmarks on normal proof nickels. The coin is distinguishable only by the mintmark, as the overall design remains the standard Franki-Mercanti Return to Monticello configuration used since 2006. Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 2020-W as a required modern key or semi-key.

The 2020-W Jefferson nickels represent the Mint's recent practice of including special collectible items in standard proof and mint sets to drive sales and give collectors additional motivation to purchase complete sets. The practice has produced multiple low-mintage modern issues that command premiums over standard production.
