About this coinHistory

The 2020-W Reverse Proof Jefferson nickel is a second West Point issue of the year, produced as part of a special Reverse Proof Set that also included other denominations in the reverse proof format. The coin combines the W mintmark (first appearance on Jefferson nickels, along with the 2020-W standard proof) with the reverse proof finish (frosted fields, mirror devices).

The 2020-W Reverse Proof has a low mintage similar to the standard 2020-W proof and is a scarce modern issue. Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire both 2020-W varieties (standard proof and reverse proof) as distinct entries.

The dual 2020-W Jefferson nickels (standard proof and reverse proof) mark the first appearance of the W mintmark on the Jefferson nickel series after many years of W being used only on gold bullion coins and certain commemoratives. The 2020 issuance represents the Mint's willingness to use the West Point facility for special Jefferson nickel production when packaging opportunities justify it.
