The 1959 Proof cent holds a special distinction: it was the first proof coin to carry Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia produced proof sets for collectors, striking each coin multiple times with specially polished dies to create sharp, mirror-like surfaces. Just over 1.1 million proof cents were included in that year's sets.
Proof coins are not made for spending. They are struck slowly and carefully, then sealed in protective packaging. The 1959 proof is particularly sought after because it represents the debut year of a design that would last until 2008. Collectors of Lincoln cents often consider this proof the natural starting point for a Memorial reverse proof collection. Its relatively modest mintage compared to later proof issues adds a small degree of scarcity, though it remains affordable and widely available in the market.
