About this coinHistory

The 1960 Large Date Proof was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the annual proof set offered to collectors. Proof coins receive multiple strikes from highly polished dies, giving them a sharp, reflective finish that regular circulation strikes lack. The combined mintage for all 1960 proof varieties was approximately 1.69 million pieces.

Because the 1960 proof sets contained both Large Date and Small Date varieties (depending on which dies were used), collectors of that era sometimes purchased multiple sets hoping to find one of each. The Large Date Proof is the more commonly encountered of the two and remains affordable. Its crisp Memorial reverse, only in its second year of production, shows Frank Gasparro's design in full detail.
