The 1960-D D/D Small/Large Date is a repunched mintmark variety that combines two collecting interests: the date size difference and a doubled "D" mintmark. On these coins, the Denver mintmark was punched into the die more than once, leaving a visible doubling or offset of the letter. Additionally, the date shows characteristics of both the Small Date and Large Date styles, suggesting a transitional die state.
Denver's combined 1960 mintage exceeded 1.58 billion coins across all varieties, making it a massive production year. Only a small number of those coins came from the specific die or dies that produced this D/D repunched mintmark with the transitional date. Identifying the variety requires a loupe or microscope and familiarity with both the mintmark positioning and the date size characteristics. Collectors who pursue repunched mintmark varieties consider this a rewarding addition to the early Memorial cent years.
