About this coinHistory

Denver's 1962 output of Lincoln cents topped 1.79 billion, continuing the mint's role as the nation's highest-volume cent producer. The "D" mintmark identifies these coins. They flooded into commerce during a year when John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth and the Space Race captured the country's imagination.

For all the excitement of space exploration and Cold War tension, the cent's design stayed constant. The 1962-D is one of the most common dates in the entire Memorial cent series and is available in quantity at minimal cost. Collectors include it as a straightforward date-and-mintmark entry.
