About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint struck roughly 757 million Lincoln cents in 1963, a year that began with hope and ended with national tragedy. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in August during the March on Washington. Three months later, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on November 22. The nation plunged into mourning.

Kennedy's death would soon reshape American coinage (the half dollar was redesigned in his honor the following year), but the cent remained unchanged. The 1963 Philadelphia issue is common and widely available in all grades. It circulated during one of the most turbulent years in modern American history.
