About this coinHistory

Approximately 3.07 million proof sets containing the 1963 Lincoln cent were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin collecting hobby was near its early-1960s peak, and proof set orders reflected that enthusiasm. Collectors who opened their 1963 sets found a sharply struck cent with full detail on both Lincoln's portrait and the Memorial columns.

The proof program would face disruption in the coming years as the coin shortage crisis forced the Mint to suspend proof set production after 1964. The 1963 proof, then, represents one of the last "normal" years before that upheaval. It remains common and affordable, with no significant varieties reported for the proof issue.
