The 1962 Proof Lincoln cent was included in approximately 3.2 million proof sets produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Proof set sales had been climbing steadily since the mid-1950s, reflecting growing public interest in coin collecting. The hobby was in a boom period during the early 1960s, fueled by newspaper coverage of rare coin finds and the excitement surrounding the new Memorial reverse.
Each 1962 proof cent was struck with extra pressure from polished dies, yielding the crisp detail and reflective surfaces that distinguish proofs from business strikes. The 1962 proof is common among proof collectors and remains affordably priced. Many surviving examples display the sought-after "cameo" contrast between frosted design elements and mirrored fields.
