About this coinHistory

The 1966 Lincoln cent continued the no-mintmark policy established the previous year. The coin shortage persisted, though it was beginning to ease. The Mint operated at extraordinary capacity, with Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco all producing cents bearing no distinguishing mintmarks. Total reported production exceeded 2.18 billion pieces across all facilities.

American involvement in Vietnam escalated sharply in 1966, with troop levels rising past 380,000. The cultural upheaval of the 1960s was accelerating. None of this touched the cent's design, which remained the same Lincoln obverse and Memorial reverse introduced in 1959. The 1966 cent is abundant and inexpensive, a coin that collectors acquire without difficulty when filling in their sets.
