About this coinHistory

The 1967 Lincoln cent was the third and final year of the no-mintmark era. The coin shortage had largely subsided by this point, and the Mint was preparing to restore mintmarks and resume proof set production in 1968. Over 3 billion cents were produced across all three minting facilities, though none carry a mintmark to identify their origin.

The Summer of Love unfolded in San Francisco. Race riots erupted in Detroit and Newark. The war in Vietnam ground on. Amid all of this, the humble cent kept circulating by the billions. The 1967 Lincoln cent is common in all grades and represents no challenge for collectors. It marks the end of the mintmark-free experiment.
