About this coinHistory

The 1968 Philadelphia cent marked the return to normalcy after three years of mintmark-free coinage. Philadelphia cents still carried no mintmark (as was traditional for that facility), but Denver and San Francisco coins once again bore their respective "D" and "S" letters. The Philadelphia Mint struck over 1.7 billion cents.

The year 1968 was one of the most tumultuous in American history. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April. Robert Kennedy was shot in June. Protests rocked the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The Tet Offensive in Vietnam shattered public confidence in the war effort. The penny, as always, kept its silence on all of it. The 1968 Philadelphia cent is common and affordable.
