About this coinHistory

Denver's 1968 output of Lincoln cents reached nearly 2.89 billion, a massive production run. The "D" mintmark returned to the obverse for the first time since 1964, ending the three-year mintmark moratorium. Collectors welcomed the restoration of mintmarks, which allowed them to once again identify which facility had produced each coin.

The 1968-D cent entered circulation during the most violent year of the 1960s. Assassinations, riots, and war dominated the headlines. The coin itself bears no trace of those upheavals. It is extremely common in all grades and widely available to collectors at nominal cost.
