About this coinHistory

The 1966 SMS (Special Mint Set) cent was the second year of the Mint's experiment with Special Mint Sets in place of traditional proof coins. About 2.26 million sets were produced, a dramatic decrease from the inflated 1965 figure. The coins were struck with more care than standard circulation issues, using better-prepared dies and planchets to achieve a superior finish.

Like all 1966 coins, the SMS cent carries no mintmark. Its surfaces often display a distinctive satin-like quality, different from both the mirror fields of proofs and the cartwheel luster of regular uncirculated coins. Some examples show light die polish lines, evidence of the extra preparation given to the dies. Collectors who want a representative example of this three-year interlude between proof eras will find the 1966 SMS easy to locate.
