About this coinHistory

The 1967 SMS (Special Mint Set) cent was the final issue in the three-year Special Mint Set program. Approximately 1.86 million sets were struck, the lowest total of the three SMS years. The Mint would return to producing traditional proof sets in 1968, restoring the familiar mirror-finish coins that collectors preferred.

By 1967, the Special Mint Set format had proven unpopular with many hobbyists. Collectors missed the deep mirror fields and sharp frosted devices of true proofs. The SMS coins, while superior to circulation strikes, simply did not satisfy the same aesthetic desire. The 1967 SMS cent, like its 1965 and 1966 predecessors, carries no mintmark. Its satin finish and sharper-than-average strike distinguish it from regular issues. As the last of the SMS cents, the 1967 holds a minor distinction, marking the conclusion of an unusual episode in Mint history.
