About this coinHistory

The 1968-S Proof Lincoln cent inaugurated a new era in proof coinage. After the three-year suspension (1965-1967) during which Special Mint Sets replaced proofs, the U.S. Mint resumed proof set production in 1968. The key change: proof operations moved from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Mint. All proof cents from 1968 onward bear the "S" mintmark.

Approximately 3.04 million proof sets were sold. Collectors eagerly purchased them, relieved to have "real" proofs again after the unpopular SMS interlude. The 1968-S Proof cent features the deep mirror fields and sharp detail that hobbyists had missed. It is the first San Francisco proof cent in the Memorial series and the starting point for collectors who assemble proof sets by date. The coin is readily available and affordable.
