About this coinHistory

The 1969-S Proof cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of approximately 2.93 million pieces, included in that year's proof sets. The proof program had been running smoothly since its 1968 resumption at San Francisco, and collector demand remained strong.

In the broader world, 1969 was dominated by the Apollo 11 moon landing, which took place on July 20. The proof cent, struck with mirror-like fields and sharp frosted devices, captured Lincoln's portrait and the Memorial reverse in their finest detail. Cameo and deep cameo examples from this era are more readily available than from earlier proof years, as die preparation techniques had improved. The 1969-S Proof is affordable and widely held in collections.
