About this coinHistory

The 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse is one of the most famous and valuable coins in the entire Lincoln cent series. The doubling on this variety is dramatic and unmistakable. The word "LIBERTY," the date "1969," and the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" all show strong, clearly separated secondary images visible to the naked eye. No magnification is needed to see the doubling on a genuine example.

The variety was created when a working die received a second impression from the hub at a significant rotation or offset from the first. The Mint did not catch the error before the die entered production at San Francisco. An unknown but very small number of coins were struck before the die was pulled. The Secret Service initially investigated reports of the coin, suspecting counterfeiting, and some early examples were confiscated before the Mint confirmed the variety was genuine.

Estimates suggest that fewer than 100 examples are known in all grades combined, though the true number is uncertain. The coin catalogs for tens of thousands of dollars even in heavily circulated condition, and six-figure prices have been realized for high-grade specimens at major auctions. Counterfeits and altered coins are widespread. Any 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse should be authenticated by a major third-party grading service before purchase.

The 1969-S DDO shares its mintage figure of 544 million with the regular 1969-S cent, but only a tiny fraction came from the doubled die. Among Lincoln Memorial cent varieties, the 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse stands alone as the most celebrated and most valuable. Collectors who find a genuine example have discovered one of the great treasures of modern American numismatics.
