About this coinHistory

The San Francisco Mint struck approximately 544 million Lincoln cents for circulation in 1969, bearing the "S" mintmark. San Francisco's role had shifted since the coin shortage era; the facility now produced both circulation strikes and proof coins, though its circulation output was far smaller than Philadelphia's or Denver's.

The 1969-S circulation cent is readily available. It shares its combined mintage figure with the famous 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse, one of the great rarities in the Lincoln cent series, but the overwhelming majority of 1969-S cents are perfectly normal coins. Collectors should not confuse the two. The standard 1969-S is inexpensive and easily found.
