About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 1.9 billion cents in 1971. President Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard in August, ending the Bretton Woods system that had governed international finance since World War II. The Pentagon Papers were published, revealing the government's internal history of the Vietnam War and deepening public distrust.

The 1971 Lincoln cent carries no mintmark. It is common in all grades and circulated heavily during a period of rising inflation. Collectors include it as a routine date in their Memorial cent sets.
