The 1970-S Small Date is the scarcer of the two date varieties produced at San Francisco for circulation in 1970. The numerals in "1970" are thinner and smaller, with the "7" in particular showing a weaker, shorter crossbar compared to the Large Date. The tops of the digits on the Small Date sit lower relative to the rim.
While both varieties share the combined San Francisco mintage of about 693 million, the Small Date was produced in smaller quantities. In high grades, the 1970-S Small Date commands a noticeable premium. Variety specialists actively seek well-preserved examples for their collections. The coin is not rare in an absolute sense, but it is distinctly less common than the Large Date counterpart, especially in mint state.
