About this coinHistory

The 1970-S Doubled Die Obverse is a recognized variety among Lincoln Memorial cent specialists. The doubling is most visible on the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY," though it is more subtle than the famous 1969-S or 1972 doubled dies. Magnification is generally needed to confirm the variety.

San Francisco's combined 1970-S mintage exceeded 693 million pieces across all varieties, but only coins struck from the specific doubled die qualify. The 1970-S DDO carries a moderate premium over the regular 1970-S cent. It is not in the same league of rarity as the 1969-S DDO, but variety collectors pursue it as a worthwhile addition to a specialized collection. Authentication is recommended, as lesser forms of doubling (machine doubling, die deterioration doubling) can be confused with a true hub-doubled die.
