About this coinHistory

The 1976 Philadelphia cent was struck during America's Bicentennial year. The nation celebrated 200 years of independence with festivals, fireworks, and tall ships sailing into New York Harbor on July 4. Special Bicentennial designs appeared on the quarter, half dollar, and dollar coin, but the cent and dime kept their existing designs unchanged.

Some collectors were disappointed that the cent received no Bicentennial treatment, but the decision reflected practical constraints. The Mint was already producing enormous quantities of the specially designed Bicentennial coins for the higher denominations and could not take on additional design changes for the cent. Philadelphia struck over 4.67 billion pennies that year. The 1976 cent carries no mintmark and is extremely common.
