About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint set a new production record with over 7.4 billion cents in 1980. Inflation peaked near 14% that year, the highest rate since World War II. The Federal Reserve under Chairman Paul Volcker raised interest rates to punishing levels in an effort to break the inflationary cycle. The economy teetered between recession and runaway prices.

The massive cent production reflected these conditions: more transactions at higher prices meant more coins needed. The 1980 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is among the most common dates in the entire series. Collectors treat it as a commodity issue with no premium in any grade.
