About this coinHistory

The 1981-S Type 1 Proof cent uses the same "Filled S" mintmark style that characterized most proof production through the late 1970s. The "S" appears rounded and somewhat thick, with the interior spaces of the letter partially filled. The combined proof mintage for 1981 was approximately 4.06 million sets.

The Type 1 accounts for the bulk of 1981 proof production, as the Mint did not switch to the Clear S punch until later in the year. The coin is widely available and affordably priced. Collectors who track the mintmark transition include both types in their proof sets, but the Type 1 is the easier and less expensive of the two to acquire.
