The 1981-S Type 2 Proof cent features the "Clear S" mintmark, a crisper and more sharply defined letter than the Type 1 "Filled S" used on the majority of 1981 proof coins. The transition to the new mintmark punch occurred partway through the year's proof production run.
Because the Clear S was introduced late, the Type 2 is the scarcer variety. It commands a premium over the Type 1, especially in deep cameo condition. The difference between the two is visible under moderate magnification; the Type 2's "S" has open, clean interior spaces and well-defined serifs. The 1981-S Type 2 is the last of the Type 1/Type 2 mintmark pairs in the Lincoln cent proof series, as subsequent years used the Clear S exclusively. Collectors who pursue completeness in proof varieties consider both 1979 and 1981 Type 2 coins essential pieces.
