About this coinHistory

The 1982-S Proof cent was struck at San Francisco in a quantity of approximately 3.86 million pieces. Notably, the proof was struck in the traditional bronze (95% copper) composition, not the new zinc composition that was being phased into circulation production. The Mint chose to keep the proof in bronze, giving collectors a coin with the heft and tone of the traditional cent.

Proof set subscribers received their 1982-S cents during the year of the composition transition, making this proof a bridge between two eras. The coin weighs 3.1 grams and features the deep mirror fields and frosted devices expected of San Francisco proofs. It is affordable and widely available. Cameo and deep cameo designations are common for this issue.
